Claremont Console Table

The Claremont Console is the piece I return to when I want to remind myself what forged steel is truly capable of, a design of raw, unbridled energy that pushes the material to its absolute expressive limit and arrives somewhere that no other medium could reach. The base is a dense constellation of broad, blade like forms, each one tapered to a point at its extremities and curved with a subtle, organic swell through its body, the whole assembly crossing and interlocking at every angle in a composition of extraordinary three dimensional complexity that changes entirely as you move around it, revealing new layers, new intersections, new plays of light and gold with every step. The inspiration came from studying the structure of natural crystals under magnification, those extraordinary formations where geometry and chaos coexist in perfect, accidental harmony and from the explosive energy of abstract expressionist sculpture, where mass and movement are held in perpetual, thrilling tension. Finished in bitumen on brown, the broad faces of the blades catch the warm, golden tones of the finish with a luminosity that makes the entire base glow from across the room. The limestone top above is the one deliberate act of restraint, clean, pale and uncompromising, making the golden drama beneath all the more magnificent by contrast.
