Metropolitan II Console Table

The Metropolitan II Console takes its inspiration from the soaring vertical language of Manhattan’s great skyscrapers, those extraordinary early twentieth century towers where the relentless repetition of vertical elements created a sense of upward energy and civic ambition that has never been surpassed in architecture before or since. The base is a series of paired flat rectangular frames, each one a precise vertical portal that rises from a shared base rail and meets the underside of the top in a rhythm that is at once disciplined and deeply satisfying, the repetition creating a colonnade effect of considerable grandeur that casts dramatic shadows across the floor as the light moves throughout the day. The flat faced steel sections are finished in bitumen on brown, a warm, complex tone that moves between burnished gold and deeper amber, giving the rigidly geometric structure a richness and depth that prevents it from ever feeling cold or purely industrial. The limestone top above is wide and generous, its pale, natural surface providing a calm horizontal counterpoint to all that vertical energy beneath.
