Montrose Console Table

The Montrose Console occupies a category entirely its own, somewhere between furniture and large scale sculpture, between the natural world and the abstract, between something ancient and something entirely of the moment. The base is cut from flat steel plate in a composition of sweeping, biomorphic forms, great flowing voids and solid masses that interlock and overlap across the full width of the piece in a pattern that resists easy description but rewards prolonged looking, suggesting at different moments the branching of coral, the erosion of coastal rock, the aerial view of a river delta, or the magnified cross section of a living cell. It was nature’s own design processes, the way organic forms grow and recede around each other with a logic that is neither random nor consciously planned, that drove every decision in this piece, and the result is something that could only ever have been made by hand. Finished in bitumen silver, the broad, burnished planes of the steel catch the light with a cool, mercurial quality that makes the piece shimmer and shift as you move around it, while the ebony granite top above provides a single, definitive horizontal of deep black that anchors the organic drama beneath with absolute authority.
