Portland Coffee Table

The Portland Coffee Table shares the same architectural vocabulary as its side table sibling, that bold, geometric language of flat faced rectangular sections assembled with the precision and confidence of a building rather than a piece of furniture, but at coffee table scale the composition takes on an entirely new quality of presence and gravitas. The stepped stretcher detail at the base, where a double rail runs between the legs before turning outward in a characteristic right angled step, creates a shadow line of real sophistication that anchors the piece to the floor with considerable visual weight whilst keeping the overall form open and light. Every surface of the hand worked frame carries an allover hammered texture that catches the Tudor silver finish with a mottled, complex beauty, cool and lustrous, moving between pale pewter and warmer champagne tones as the light shifts across the day, the variation in the surface ensuring that the geometric forms never feel cold or mechanical. The ebony granite top, with its deep polished black surface, sits above the silver frame in a pairing of maximum contrast, dark and light, smooth and textured, natural and crafted, each element making the other more beautiful by comparison.
