Beauchamp Console Table

The Beauchamp Console is a piece that rewards the eye that travels all the way to the floor, because it is there, in the crossed oval stretcher that connects the four legs at their base, that the design reveals its finest detail and its deepest classical roots. Two slender rods cross and overlap in an elongated oval form, gathered at the crossing point with a small collar that holds the composition together with the precision of a jeweller’s setting, a detail drawn from the great tradition of English and French neoclassical furniture, where the stretcher was never merely structural but always an opportunity for considered decorative expression. The four textured legs taper from an apron to slender shafts that continue down to fine points at the floor. Finished in bitumen on brown, the warm, mottled gold of the hand applied finish catches the allover hammered texture of the apron and legs with a richness and complexity that gives the piece considerable presence despite its refined proportions. The dark wood inset top sits within the frame with a quiet, considered elegance, its deep, rich grain a perfect foil to the luminous gold work beneath.
