Champagne Console Table
Console TablesThe Champagne Console is the fullest expression of an idea that has fascinated me for years, the question of how slender a leg can become before a table ceases to feel credible, and the discovery that the answer is far more extreme than conventional furniture design would ever dare to explore. Four legs of extraordinary delicacy, each one tapering from the arched flute at the apron to a fine point at the floor, carry the full length of the limestone top with a confidence and precision that stops people in their tracks the first time they encounter the piece in a room. The flute where each leg meets the frame is the signature detail of the Champagne family, a smooth, organic flaring that echoes the calyx of a flower or the way a stem swells at its junction with a branch, giving the junction a fluidity and naturalness that makes the metalwork appear to have grown into this form rather than been shaped by hand. Finished in flamed bronze, the warm, complex tones of the darkened metal develop a beautiful iridescence that shifts across the day, the rounded surfaces of the legs catching the finish with a depth and subtlety. The Jura Beige top, with its warm sandy surface and fossil rich character, completes the pairing with quiet natural beauty.
