If the Hammered Console is a study in texture, the Heavily Hammered Side Table takes that obsession to its most expressive conclusion, a piece where the making process is worn so openly and so proudly that the surface itself becomes the story. Each leg has been worked with far greater intensity than any other piece in our collection, the steel built up and broken back repeatedly until it achieves a almost geological quality, like a core sample of ancient rock or the bark of a tree that has stood for centuries. At close range the surface is endlessly fascinating, peaks and valleys of metal catching light and shadow in constant, shifting variety, while from across the room the overall effect is one of deep, brooding richness that anchors any space with real authority. The clean limestone top provides a deliberate and essential contrast, its smooth pale surface making the raw drama of the metalwork beneath all the more arresting.
