Pelham Console Table
Console TablesThe Pelham Console grew from a long fascination with the work of the De Stijl movement and the grid based compositions of Mondrian, that radical early twentieth century idea that pure horizontal and vertical elements, arranged with sufficient intention and asymmetric tension, could generate a visual energy more dynamic and alive than any representational form. The base is a carefully constructed labyrinth of flat rectangular bars, stepping and intersecting at varying heights across the full width of the piece in a composition that is entirely asymmetric yet feels completely resolved, each element placed with the same deliberate precision that a painter brings to the placement of a line on canvas. Viewed from different angles the relationships between the bars shift and change, creating new compositions of positive and negative space that reward the kind of slow, attentive looking that the best design always encourages. Finished in flamed bronze, the dark, warm tones of the metalwork give the graphic geometry a richness and material weight that keeps the piece firmly grounded in craft rather than concept. The long limestone top floats above this extraordinary base with serene composure.
