Seville Coffee Table

The Seville Coffee Table was inspired by the extraordinary decorative metalwork of Andalusia, those intricate wrought iron screens, balconies and lanterns that define the architecture of southern Spain, where the blacksmith’s craft was elevated to a high art over centuries of Moorish and Spanish influence and where no surface was considered too minor to receive the full attention of a skilled hand. The oval frame is covered in an allover hammered texture of exceptional richness, worked across every face of the apron and legs so that the bitumen on brown finish catches the light with a complexity and warmth that shifts continuously around the full circumference of the piece. Between the upper and lower tiers, a series of small U-shaped bracket details connect frame to shelf with a quiet decorative intelligence that references the arched forms of Moorish architecture whilst remaining entirely contemporary in their resolution. The clear glass top allows the full beauty of the golden frame to remain visible from above, while the antique mirror glass shelf below adds a layer of extraordinary depth and reflective quality, its aged, foxed surface creating a soft, mysterious luminosity that animates the lower half of the piece beautifully.
